Alcohol
- found in drinks varied concentrations measured in % by volume
- a depressant
- reduces inhibitions
- socially accepted
- can make you lightheaded and dizzy
- concentrates emotions - can become very happy or very down
- illegal for under 18's to buy (can buy with a meal at 16)
- can black out
- can become addicted
Cannabis
- drug made from hemp plant
- made into resin blocks, oil or leaves dried "grass"
- rolled with tobacco into "joints" or smoked in pipe
- can make people feel chilled out
- makes you chatter and giggle
- can make you vomit
- sometimes you can trip-out and see hallucinations
- makes you crave food (the munchies)
- can't concentrate
- makes you feel tired all the time
- class B drug max 5 years prison (possession) or 14 years (supply)
Cocaine
- white powder can be snorted or injected
- big time stimulant
- makes you buzz and feel powerful and great
- only lasts a little while so you end up taking lots
- class A drug max 7 years prison (possession) life sentence (supply)
- very expensive
- can burn your nose out
- makes you paranoid
- can O/D and die
- addictive
Crack
- Cocaine you smoke in a pipe
- same as Coke but bigger buzz for less time
- Class A drug so 7yrs - life for possession and dealing addictive
- dirty - you don't know what else is in it
- bad for your breathing and makes you feel sick
- you can O/D and die or take up other drugs
- expensive
Ecstasy
- (mdma) gets you up and out of yourself
- Feel great, love everything and everyone
- makes music and dancing more intense
- lasts for ages (3-6 hours)
- come in tablets with different designs
- mixed with other things - you don't know what!
- class A drug (7yrs-life again)
- you don't drink and can de-hydrate whilst dancing but drinking too much is worse, should be a pint of fluid an hour.
Mushrooms
- mushroom (usually the Liberty Cap) with LSD like effects
- grows all over the place but looks like another 'shroom which is poisonous
- eat them raw or put them in tea or cakes
- legal if you eat them where you picked them but class A if you dry them or put them in tea (again 7- life)
- taste awful
- make you feel trippy but not always
- can just make you vomit
- you have to eat loads for any effect and then it can be a bad trip
- risks for mental illnesses same as LSD
Speed
- dirt white powder or pills, snort or swallow, smoke or inject
- stimulant, gets your heart going, makes you feel alive
- stops you eating
- usually mixed up with loads of other stuff to make the amphetamine go further (like baking powder)
- can O/D really easily since strength varies
- you feel tired afterwards and can become paranoid
- addictive and you need more to get the buzz the longer you take it
- class B drug (5 years for possession 14 for dealing- max)
- if prepared for injecting it becomes a class A drug
- can lead to mental illnesses like psychosis
Tobacco
- made from tobacco leaves dried and put into cigarettes / pipes / snuff and chewing wads
- addictive
- nicotine in the tobacco can make you light-headed at first
- illegal to sell to under 16's
- the buzz is short and in the end the only good thing is you need to have a smoke to feel normal
- stimulant - makes your heart beat faster
- can make you vomit
- smells bad
- expensive
- more likely to get cancer, lung problems and circulation problems, bad for unborn babies
LSD
- Acid, comes on paper or card with pictures (LSD is a liquid)
- class A drug (same again 7- life for posession / dealing)
- makes you stay awake for ages
- makes you "trip" see things and hear things and go inside your own dreams
- lasts for hours and hours and can have flash backs ages after the trip
- can make you paranoid or do stupid things (like believing you're superman)
- need sober friends around to keep you safe
- hard to buy and quite expensive
Heroin
- made out of morphine (from opium poppy)
- usually light brown colour but can be white powder if pure
- can sniff it, smoke it and inject it
- addictive
- class A drug (AGAIN)
- makes you feel brilliant, relaxed and happy
- expensive
- street heroin can be weak or strong so O/D is easy to do
- can damage your veins
- sharing needles can be dangerous (HIV and hepatitus)
- the first buzz is the best, it gets worse the more you take
- hard to quit because it means changing your whole life
Solvents
- lighter gases, aerosols, glues, paint thinners
- sniff the fumes, get a buzz
- doesn't last long (15-45 mins) and you get a headache after
- cheap
- illegal to sell to under 18's but not illegal to possess
- first sniff can kill you
- makes you vomit
- can damage your brain, liver and kidneys
